BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Dr. Anthony Graham is a tenured Professor of Educator Preparation at Winston-Salem State University. From 2018 to 2023, Graham served as the Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at Winston-Salem State University. From 2023 to 2024, he served as the interim Chancellor of Winston-Salem State University. Prior to these positions, Graham was a tenured Full Professor and dean of the College of Education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. A graduate of Kinston High School, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned the bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in mathematics in 1997. He obtained the master’s degree in Secondary English Education in 1999 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Curriculum and Teaching with a cognate in Multicultural Education in 2003 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Prior to his work in higher education, Dr. Graham was a high school English teacher.
For nearly a decade, Graham has conducted research on African American adolescent students, focusing primarily on African American males. More specifically, he has examined how the schooling process promotes or inhibits the construction of these students' academic and cultural identities. He has presented his research on this topic at a number of international, national, and state conferences and professional meetings. During his tenure at North Carolina A&T State University, Graham published a variety of book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles, and co-authored a book. Additionally, he has written numerous grants to external agencies and procured awards totaling approximately $25 million. He also served as the Associate Managing Editor of the historic peer-review academic journal The Negro Educational Review, and he served on the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Engineering Education. He has also served on the Educational Testing Services National Advisory Board for the Praxis I Assessment.
Graham's work in academe has not gone unnoticed. In February 2014, Dr. Graham was recognized by the Business Journal magazine as one of the Piedmont Triad's "40 Leaders Under 40." The Empire Corporation named him one of the Top Young Executives and Professionals in the United States. He was also recognized by Marquis Who's Who in America and by Who's Who among America's Teachers. Additionally, he received the School of Education's Grantsmanship Award in 2006, the University's Academic Advising Excellence Award in 2007, and the University's Outstanding Young Researcher Award in 2008. He is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi International Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. He is a sought after public speaker who shares a message grounded in academic optimism, political awareness, and critical consciousness. He also serves as an educational consultant for public school districts to assist teachers and administrators with delivering high-quality instruction grounded explicitly in culturally relevant pedagogy that engages all students in the learning process.
